What is Little Athletics?
Little Athletics is a uniquely Australian modified athletics program for children from 5 to 15 years, although some State Associations may offer age groups outside this range. As the name suggests, it is based upon the sport of athletics (track and field). There is a wide range of events from running, jumping, throwing and walking and events are modified to suit the age, developmental stage and ability of the children. Little Athletics promotes that it is important to “Be your Best” ®. The emphasis is on fun, participation, performance, technique and getting involved with your family in physical and healthy activity. The motto of Little Athletics is ‘Family, Fun and Fitness”. Across Australia, more than 100,000 girls and boys enjoy the activities of Little Athletics. Little Athletics is the “Foundation for all Sports”. All sports use the skills developed at Little Athletics.
How is Buninyong Little Aths run?
Buninyong Little Athletics Club is managed entirely by the parents of our athletes
on a voluntary basis, and with many events conducted each week a great deal of assistance is needed to ensure the smooth running of the program.
An Age Manager is allocated to each age group, but your help is needed to time races and measure distances. If you are new to athletics, don’t be afraid to offer help, someone will show you how easily it is done. The program cannot be conducted smoothly without your help from start to finish.
We encourage you to become involved, and help us help your child achieve their best. It doesn’t matter if your child comes first, second or last in any event, it is the personal impr
ovement and development that matters. It is essential that at least one parent or friend (or a responsible adult with appropriate authority) is present from each family at all times.
What is the age range?
Little Athletics is open to children aged 5 to 15 years. Children under 6 years participate in the On Track program which is aimed at teaching fundamental skills.

Does my child have to be a good athlete?
No, Little Athletics is about your child learning different athletics events and improving on their own achievements (i.e. “personal bests”).
Will my child be competing?
Each week your child will be encouraged to achieve their own personal best and embrace our vision of ‘be your best’. Children are rewarded with certificates based on personal best achievement and also displaying our core values of respect, inclusiveness and team spirit.
If your child is interested in pursuing Little Athletics competitively there are Regional and State Carnivals held throughout the year.Competitive events are for ages 9 and up, with younger age groups still given the opportunity to participate at both carnivals and other LAVic events.
As registered athletes your children will have tremendous opportunities to participate in both Regional and State Championships. We encourage your family to participate, not only for the athletics, but for you also as these events offer chances to make life long friendships from throughout the Little Athletics Community.
