Buninyong Little Athletics was formall established and office holders appointed at a meeting held at Royal Park Hall on 28 May. Some 25 community members from Buninyong and district attended.

It was great to see such a positive turnout from the local community with most of the attendees putting up their hand to volunteer in some capacity.”

The CEO of Little Athletics Victoria, Anthony McIntosh was in attendance along with the President of the Little Athletics Western Country Region, Shane Bicknell and the President of Ballarat Little Athletics, Belinda Wardle. Wardle was delighted with the evening. “It was great to see such a positive turnout from the local community with most of the attendees putting up their hand to volunteer in some capacity,” Wardle said.

Little Athletics is a program for children aged from 5 to 16 years with an emphasis on fun, participation, performance, technique and getting involved with your family in physical and healthy activity. Most of the attendees stated that they were interested in the program for fitness, fun and the social side of being involved in a community group.

Shane Bicknell was appointed President of Buninyong Little Athletics and will use his experience with Little Athletics to get the Buninyong group up and running. Shane, his wife Julie and daughter Abby have been heavily involved with Ballarat Little Athletics, which now boasts approximately 250 young participants, and are keen to help the Buninyong group establish themselves.

The Buninyong Little Athletics Committee will meet regularly leading up to the commencement of the Little Athletics season in Summer, with a focus on getting equipment, sponsorships and continuing to build community interest.

“There will be a strong effort from the committee to get whatever equipment we can via donations from other clubs and from the community but if the first season is simply having the kids running between two white lines on a grass oval, then that’s what we’ll do!” Bicknell said.

Shane expects there will be around 50 children participating in the first season with numbers increasing to between 100 to 150 in the 2019/20 season.

Community support of any kind is welcome in the form of volunteers, committee members, sponsorships and of course, little athletes!
